Moving Audio Files Off Patreon

Before you can migrate from Patreon to Benecaster, your episode audio files must be hosted somewhere other than Patreon. This is a hard requirement — not a configuration option.

Benecaster does not host audio. It generates RSS feeds that point to audio URLs at your existing podcast host. When a subscriber’s app polls their private feed, Benecaster returns <enclosure> tags pointing directly to those hosted files. If your audio is still on Patreon, those URLs become inaccessible once you leave — your subscribers’ feeds will break.

Do You Have This Problem?

Not every Patreon podcaster hosts audio directly on Patreon. Many already use a podcast hosting provider and Patreon only for payments and subscriber management. If that describes you, your audio hosting is already in place — skip to Migrating from Patreon.

This applies to you if your episode audio URLs look like:

https://www.patreon.com/file?h=...
https://stream.mux.com/...  (Patreon video)

If your audio URLs point to Buzzsprout, Libsyn, Podbean, Transistor, Anchor, Captivate, or any S3/CDN URL that isn’t Patreon, you’re already set.

How to check: In your Patreon dashboard, open a recent post and inspect the audio attachment. If the file URL is on a Patreon or Mux domain, you need to move it.

Step 1 — Choose a Podcast Host

Any podcast hosting provider that gives you direct audio file URLs works with Benecaster. Common options:

Buzzsprout — straightforward import tool, widely used
Libsyn — industry standard, direct MP3 URL access
Podbean — bulk upload via zip or FTP
Transistor — clean import flow
Captivate — supports bulk import
Amazon S3 / Cloudfront — for podcasters who prefer self-managed storage

Choose based on your existing preferences, not for Benecaster compatibility — the only requirement is that each episode produces a stable, direct audio file URL.

Step 2 — Download Your Audio from Patreon

Patreon provides a data export that includes your posts and attachments:

Go to patreon.com/portal → Settings → Privacy
Request a data export — Patreon emails you a download link
The archive includes your audio files organized by post

Depending on your catalog size, this can take a few minutes to several hours. Large catalogs with many episodes may require downloading in batches.

Step 3 — Upload to Your Podcast Host

Upload your audio files to your chosen host. Most providers have a bulk or CSV import option — consult your host’s documentation for the fastest path.

For each episode, your hosting provider will generate a direct audio URL in the form:

https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/12345/episode-title.mp3

Keep a record of these URLs — you’ll need them in the next step.

Step 4 — Set Audio URLs in Benecaster

In Benecaster, each episode has an Audio URL field. This is the URL Benecaster includes in RSS enclosure tags. Set it to the new URL from your hosting provider.

If you’re creating your episodes in Benecaster as part of migration setup, enter the hosted URL directly when creating each episode. If episodes already exist in Benecaster from an earlier import, edit each episode and update the Audio URL field.

There is no automatic sync between Patreon episode data and Benecaster audio URLs — each episode URL is set explicitly in the episode editor.

Step 5 — Confirm in the Migration Wizard

When you run the Migration Wizard, it asks you to confirm that your audio is hosted externally before proceeding. This is a manual confirmation — the wizard does not validate individual episode URLs. Make sure all episodes have hosted audio URLs in place before checking this box.

Timing

Move audio and update episode URLs before you run the Migration Wizard and import subscribers. The moment a subscriber completes migration, their podcast app will poll their new Benecaster feed and attempt to access your episode audio. If any episode still points to a Patreon URL at that point, those episodes will not play.

A safe order:

Set up Benecaster and connect your subscription plugin
Create and configure your shows and episodes — with hosted audio URLs
Verify audio plays correctly from at least one episode
Run the Migration Wizard
