Token Reset Not Working
Almost every “the reset didn’t work” report turns out to be one of two things: the subscriber never received the new URL, or they received it but their podcast app is still pointed at the old one.
The reset itself rarely fails. Token Reset covers how it’s meant to work; this page covers what to check when it doesn’t.
“My Subscriber Lost Their Feed URL”
This does not need a reset. A reset makes the subscriber remove the podcast from their app and add it again, and they lose their place in every episode and any downloads. For a lost URL, use one of these instead:
- Send them to their account page. Their feed URL is shown there with a Copy button, a QR code and podcast app buttons.
- Click Email link on their detail panel in Benecaster → Subscribers. It emails them the URL they already have and changes nothing, so their app keeps working. The panel confirms with a partly hidden email address, for example “Sent to d•••@example.com. Nothing was reset — their podcast app is unaffected.” It sends even when the show’s Feed URL reset email is switched off, because you asked for it.
You will not see the subscriber’s URL yourself. No screen in wp-admin shows a subscriber’s working feed URL, so that it can’t be copied off your screen or out of a support reply; Email link sends it straight to the subscriber instead.
Keep resets for URLs that have been shared or exposed.
“Email Link Says It Can’t Recover the URL”
Sometimes Email link refuses and sends nothing, with a message that Benecaster can’t recover this subscriber’s feed URL. That is expected for some subscribers, not a fault:
- their link was created before Benecaster started keeping a recoverable copy of each link
- your site’s encryption key has changed since their link was created
- your server’s PHP has no libsodium, which Benecaster needs to read the stored copy
For these subscribers, a reset is the only way to get them a URL they can copy. Explain the cost first. After the reset, their new link is recoverable like any other. If the subscriber has no email address on their account, Email link says so instead.
“One Subscriber Can Copy Their URL and Another Can’t”
On the account page, most subscribers see their full feed URL with a working Copy button, a QR code and live app buttons. A subscriber whose URL can’t be recovered, for the reasons above, sees only the first few characters, a disabled Copy button, an empty QR box and a note offering a reset. Both are working as designed. Comparing two subscribers’ screenshots is how this usually gets reported as a bug.
A theme that overrides the account page’s feed URL, QR code or app link templates shows every subscriber the masked version until the overrides are updated. See Template Overrides.
First, Confirm the Reset Actually Happened
Open the subscriber’s record in Benecaster → Subscribers. If their feed URL is different from the one they’re quoting you, the reset worked and the problem is downstream — delivery or the app.
If the URL is unchanged, the reset didn’t take. Run it again and watch for an error. A reset that appears to succeed but doesn’t change the URL is worth reporting.
“They Never Got the New URL”
The reset email is a normal Benecaster email, so it fails in all the normal ways — no SMTP configured, a throttled queue, or spam filtering. Work through Emails Not Sending.
Two causes specific to reset emails:
The show’s Feed URL reset email is switched off (Show Settings → Subscription → Welcome and Feed URL Emails). Resetting one subscriber from their detail panel makes this visible immediately: with the switch off, Reset and send email is greyed out with a note, so there’s no silent failure to chase — only Reset only is available, and the panel shows the new URL once so you can send it yourself. A bulk reset from the Subscribers list is different and worth checking separately: Reset and send email stays clickable even with the switch off, and the server then resets the tokens but emails nobody — a warning says so before you confirm, and the result banner afterward reports how many subscribers were not emailed and still need their new URL from you.
You don’t need the reset email at all. The new URL is on the subscriber’s account page as soon as the reset is done, which is often the fastest resolution: point them there rather than debugging mail delivery while they wait. You can also copy it from the one-time block that appears in their detail panel right after a single reset. That block is the only place wp-admin ever shows a working URL; the Feed URL row itself is always shortened. Or click Email link, which re-sends the new URL without resetting anything again.
A bulk reset chosen as Reset only never shows a URL at all, for any subscriber in the selection — reset that subscriber again, individually, from their own detail panel if you need to see or copy their new URL.
“The New URL Doesn’t Work in Their App”
This is the common one, and it’s usually not a fault.
They added the new feed without removing the old one. Most apps treat the two URLs as separate shows. The subscriber sees a stale, broken copy alongside a working one and reports that the reset failed. Have them delete the old show entry entirely, then add the new URL.
Their app cached the old feed. Podcast apps refresh on their own schedule and some hold responses aggressively. Force a manual refresh, or remove and re-add the show.
They’re using a copied URL that got mangled. Feed URLs are long, and copying from an email body can pick up a trailing character or drop part of the token. Have them use the copy button on the account page instead of selecting text by hand.
See Adding Your Feed to a Podcast App for per-app instructions worth sending them directly.
“They’re Getting the Public Feed Instead of Their Episodes”
A working URL that returns the wrong episodes is a different problem from a reset failure, and it usually comes down to one of three things.
Check their subscription status in the subscriber list. If they’re flagged over-limit, they’re receiving the public feed because your plan’s limit has been reached — see How Subscriber Limits Work. If their membership lapsed, their token was revoked and the public feed is the expected fallback.
Or the URL is simply stale. If this subscriber was reset recently, the old URL’s token no longer matches any record — resetting replaces the token rather than adding a second one. A missing or revoked token falls back to the public feed by default, so the old link keeps working, just not the way they expect. Confirm they’ve actually swapped in the new URL from the reset email or their account page rather than continuing to use the old one.
“Self-Service Reset Isn’t Available”
If subscribers can’t reset their own URL from the account page:
- The account page needs the
[benecaster_account]shortcode on it - The subscriber has to be logged in — a logged-out visitor sees no controls
- The reset button is hidden while the show’s feed is not active, since a new link would not work either. The page says the feed is not currently active instead of showing a URL
Resets That Affect Many Subscribers at Once
After a bulk reset, expect a period of support questions. Every affected subscriber has to remove the podcast from their app and add it again, loses their place in every episode, and has to download episodes again. Some won’t read the email.
Reset in batches rather than all at once where you can, so the support load arrives in waves you can handle. And send the batch when you can respond to replies, not last thing on a Friday.
