Tax and VAT on Podcast Subscriptions

This page requires pre-publication research. The section headings and structure are final. Plugin-specific claims marked [VERIFY] must be confirmed against current documentation before this page goes live. See the research checklist at the bottom of this file.

When you use Benecaster with a membership plugin, you own the billing relationship with your subscribers — unlike Patreon, which collects and remits sales tax and VAT automatically on your behalf. That responsibility now belongs to you and your membership plugin.

This page explains what that means, what tools each supported plugin provides, and what questions to take to a tax professional.

This is not tax advice. Tax law varies by country, state, and business type. The information here covers what tools are available — not whether or how those rules apply to you. Consult a tax professional or accountant for guidance specific to your situation.

What Changed from Patreon

Patreon operates as the merchant of record for creator subscriptions in most jurisdictions. They handle VAT collection from EU and UK subscribers, file returns, and remit taxes on your behalf. You see a net payout — the tax complexity is invisible.

With Benecaster, your membership plugin processes payments directly through your Stripe account. You are the merchant. Your membership plugin may provide tools to collect and report tax, but the obligation is yours.

For many podcasters — particularly those with small subscriber bases and no international reach — this creates no immediate tax obligation. But if you have subscribers in the EU, UK, or have crossed economic nexus thresholds in US states, you need to understand what applies to you.

By Geography

United States

Sales tax on digital subscriptions varies by state. Not all states tax digital goods, and economic nexus thresholds (the point at which you’re obligated to collect) vary. Most podcasters starting out will be under these thresholds in most states.

When you do reach relevant thresholds, services like TaxJar or Avalara integrate with the membership plugins listed below to automate calculation and filing. [VERIFY: confirm TaxJar and Avalara integration availability for each plugin before publishing the plugin section below.]

European Union

EU VAT on digital services (the EU OSS scheme) applies to sellers who provide digital content to consumers in EU member states. If you have EU subscribers, this applies regardless of where you are based. Patreon handled this for you. Your membership plugin may or may not handle it — see the plugin section below.

United Kingdom

Post-Brexit VAT rules apply separately from the EU scheme. UK VAT registration is required once you exceed the UK registration threshold (currently £90,000 annual taxable turnover — [VERIFY current threshold before publishing]).

Other Jurisdictions

[VERIFY and expand if there are notable considerations for Canada (GST/HST on digital services), Australia (GST), or other markets where Benecaster’s target audience is concentrated.]

Tax Handling by Membership Plugin

Each supported plugin has different built-in tax capabilities and available add-ons. [VERIFY all claims in this section against each plugin’s current documentation before publishing.]

WooCommerce Subscriptions

WooCommerce has the most comprehensive tax infrastructure of any plugin in the supported set. Built-in tax settings handle rate configuration and display. The WooCommerce Tax service (free) provides automated US rate calculation. TaxJar for WooCommerce and Avalara for WooCommerce add-ons handle both US sales tax and EU VAT compliance automation.

[VERIFY: confirm TaxJar for WooCommerce and Avalara for WooCommerce are current and actively maintained. Confirm EU VAT / OSS coverage in their current versions.]

Recommended for: podcasters with EU or international subscribers, or US podcasters anticipating growth above state nexus thresholds.

MemberPress

MemberPress includes built-in tax settings for rate configuration and display. A TaxJar integration add-on is available. [VERIFY: confirm MemberPress TaxJar add-on is current, what it covers (US only vs EU VAT), and whether there is an EU VAT / OSS-specific solution for MemberPress users.]

[VERIFY: does MemberPress have an official EU VAT add-on or partner integration?]

PMPro includes a European VAT add-on (free). [VERIFY: confirm the PMPro European VAT add-on covers current EU OSS rules — not just the older MOSS scheme. Confirm whether it handles the UK separately post-Brexit. Confirm whether a TaxJar or similar integration is available for US sales tax automation.]

Restrict Content Pro

RCP includes basic tax settings. [VERIFY: what specifically does “basic tax settings” cover in the current RCP version — rate configuration only, or also geographic rules? Is there a TaxJar or EU VAT integration available? This is the most likely gap plugin — if coverage is limited, this section should clearly note it and direct users to consult a tax professional or consider switching plugins if tax compliance is a priority.]

  • TaxJar — Automated US sales tax and EU VAT filing. Integrates with WooCommerce and MemberPress. [VERIFY current pricing and supported integrations.]
  • Avalara — Enterprise-grade tax automation. Integrates with WooCommerce. [VERIFY current integration availability.]
  • PMPro European VAT add-on — Free add-on for Paid Memberships Pro users with EU subscribers. [VERIFY current OSS compliance.]
  • WooCommerce Tax — Free automated US tax rates for WooCommerce. [VERIFY still current and free.]

The Bottom Line

If your subscribers are all in the US and you’re under state nexus thresholds, your immediate tax obligation is likely minimal — but confirm with an accountant. If you have EU or UK subscribers, you need to take action regardless of scale. The EU OSS scheme applies from the first sale to an EU consumer.

The membership plugins listed above have the tools you need. Getting them configured correctly for your jurisdiction is worth a one-time consultation with an accountant who understands digital goods.
