What happens if I change podcast hosts after I’m on Benecaster?

Your feed URLs don’t change, and your subscribers don’t have to do anything. That is the part that usually goes wrong elsewhere, and it doesn’t here.

On most setups, moving hosts means a new feed URL, a 301 redirect from the old one, and a period of hoping every podcast app follows it. Benecaster feeds are served from your own site, so the feed URL belongs to you rather than to your host. Changing where the audio files live doesn’t touch it. Private subscriber feed URLs are unaffected too — nobody has to re-add anything to their app.

What you do have to do is repoint the audio. Each episode stores the URL of its audio file, and those URLs point at your old host. Upload your files to the new host and update the audio URL on every episode. Until you do, the feed still works but the episodes in it point at files that may stop being served.

Two things worth planning around:

• Keep the old host running until you have finished. Cancelling first means the old URLs go dead while episodes still reference them, and anyone who downloads in that window gets a broken file.
• There is no bulk repoint tool in Benecaster. For a handful of episodes, edit them. For a large back catalogue, a database search-and-replace on the old host’s domain is the usual approach — take a backup first, and if your new host has not preserved the file paths, a straight search-and-replace will not be enough.
